I thought this paragraph was in the Scotsman story, it's still in the Telegraph:

"EDF charged between £89 to £149 for every megawatt hour (MWh) of en ergy that was not produced, compared to £50 per MWh the company would have

received for selling it."

From the information in the article the payments work out at £2,000 pa per turbine

You can also work out that the owner of the land is paid approx 7,000 pa per turbine, but that's just rent and got nothing to do with power generated

From Wikipedia (if you can believe that) each of these particular turbines is 2.3 megawatts,

but here I am stuck

To get to chargeable units (kW/h) per year do you multiply by 1 (year),

365(days), 8760 (hours), 525600 (mins) or 31526000 (seconds).

but even if that's the amount generated in a year, at 5p per unit that's

115K per turbine, so 2K is pretty much in the noise even then. (and they cost a million and a bit pounds each to put up, so that makes sense as well)

Oops, silly me, forgot to divide by that 1000.

So either it makes 100 pounds pa, which is silly or we multiply up by hours to give 900K pa

In the telegraph they said about three times as much.

If it actually generated 2.3MW, thats 2300KW, which means it generates

2300 units/hour. Given you quoted the number of hours in a year and the value of each unit, I'll leave you to do the arithmetic.

but multiply by 0.25 for average output from the turbine.,

so a 2.3MW turbine (anout £2m installed ) generates around about 5 million units a year

Those sell with the FIT/ROC added at between 10 and 15p a unit. So an income of about half a million to 3/4 of a million for a two million investment.

which is good because they only last a few years before they are scrap.

The point is that the market rate at the time they were switched of was around 5p a unit.

The point is it shows what will happen if we end up with 30% average grid down to wind. We would be routinely be throwing away terawatt housrs and paying billions to turbine operators who are 'generating' elecricity we dont need and cant use, bvecause in the end with a 'rebeable obligatinenshrined oin law, teh wind companies have the government by the short hairs. And te word has got around - EDF are simply taking the piss these days, treating DECC with the utter contempt they deserve

Why would they pay them more to feather their blades and save bearing wear?

Windmills might not be good at coming on when you want them to, but they can go off at a moment's notice.
