That is what I did and the result was largely as expected. Putting a diode, resistor and inductor in series as a starting point is hardly rocket science.
I used a MOT, but more oomph to it. The target managed with AC.
I used a row of halogen bulbs as a ballast for the input. 12 sockets in parallel, so I could plug in as many of any wattage I liked to change the current limit.
