I have some in a garden gate cast hinge. The hinge is loose and letting the gate drop, so before I get it all painted, I'd like to remove the screws and re mount the gate, but will they budge, no they xxx won't.
Somebody needs to make a kind of vibrating screwdriver to do such jobs. Brian

Personally, I don't need to preserve these screws, unlike the starter of this thread, so I'm kind of leaning toward somehow breaking the screws and grinding down the remnants and resisting the hinges left or right of their original positions. Brian

That's what impact drivers are.
That's very clever. :)
They are called impact drivers Brian. But work best on nuts and bolts, or when screwing into new soft wood using screws with self cutting threads.

Such a tool has existed for decades, the vibration is created with a hammer.

Watching one of the repair programmes on TV, the trick is to pour some meths down a knife blade onto the screw which apparently leeches down & allows easier removal.
If you watch as many car repair videos as I do, (how sad is that?) there are three basic techniques to loosening screws.
- Lube penetration..
- Shock creating high instantaneous torque from an impact driver
- Heat to cause differential expansion...and or reduce oxides in a low oxygen flame
Any worse than that and its drill the bastard out time. And use stud extractors
The equivalent in a wood door would be to remove a section of wood containing the screw with a chisel/router what have you and insert a new piece of wood...
