Hi

Just looking for suppliers of logs for log cabins.

I am after a custom aged and shed companies are wanting around 3x the normal cost even though the custom size is only a few foot bigger

The prices of log cabins varies a great deal depending on the quality etc. We looked at some about 5 year back and just increasing the wall thickness from the same supplier made a huge difference.

Some are really just glorified garden sheds made to look like log cabins- thin walls etc and not built like at all like a 'log cabin'.

The big companies, like Dunster, make a number of off the shelf designs which come in different qualities (wall thickness, size etc). But if you want a special, then they need to design it and the price increases...

The smaller, specialist, companies are far more expensive but will build to your exact spec but expect to pay far, far, more.

In the end, we decided not to bother, not because of price but for other reasons (Senior Management decided she might want a polytunnel and I could have a chick run in the space in the future.)

I looked into the possibility to use a log cabin type garage when we replaced our garage. The thing that put me off was they sat on pressurised timber bearers directly on the concrete base which meant any slight undulations in the concrete was a potential leak point on exposed walls not to mention the potential over the long term for rot to take hold. Notably none of the ?logs? were pressure treated relying on user applying treatments.

In the end we went for a framed and boarded garage. This sits on a single course of bricks and DPC so no timber is in contact with the ground the bottom board slightly over laps the brick course. All the timbers are pressure treated and any boards that do develop rot are easily replaced. The supplier Regency Timber Buildings, Wrexham were most helpful even supplying engineering drawings for building control due to the garage being over 30sq mts floor space.

I am really unhappy with my Dunster House "Severn" 5m x 3m cabin. Only 3 years old and I'm sure there is rot in the roof, timbers have split and the door frame is being forced apart by the logs warping badly. Did I say I was unhappy with it? Here, have a bargepole.

*Real* log cabin made from *real logs* (caulked with tar like a boat), or insulated hut with half logs stuck to inside and outside, which may not line up?

There are some nice small ones made near here in Kent. We have four of their excellent sheds, too; the one we bought in 1987 (previous house) is still standing.
