I finally wrapped up that massive log cabin retrofit from last summer. The owner was just done with the constant staining and sealing that comes with logs, so he wanted a total overhaul with a maintanence-free metal siding. Most guys in the area wouldn't even touch the job beacuse of the framing nightmare, but I figured it was worth the headache. We ended up running vertical furring strips across the whole exterior just to get a flat surface to work with, which meant tons of shimming to account for the natural curve of the logs. The part that acutally hurt my soul was taking a chainsaw to the corner tails. Cutting off those log overhangs felt like I was stripping the character out of the place, but it was the only way to get the new siding to sit flush. We did alot of custom metal wraps around the windows and doors to keep everything watertight since none of the dimensions were standard. It turned out looking sharp and the homeowner is thrilled to never pick up a brush again, but I'm still torn on the look. Has anyone else done one of these metal log-look installs, or do you usually try to talk them into keeping the natural wood?

The shimming process on those logs is where the real money is made or lost on these retrofits. I've done a couple of these steel log-look installs over the years, and the biggest headache is always getting the planes consistent across the wall. If your furring strips aren't dead-on, the metal panels will show every single wave and dip once the sun hits them. It’s essentially building a whole new secondary frame on top of the structure, wich is alot more work than most homeowners realize when they see the marketing materials. Cutting those corner tails off is definitely the hardest part to stomach. It’s a permanent change to the structure, and once they're gone, that house is never being a traditional log cabin again. But from a purely practical standpoint, most of these owners are just tired of the $10,000 to $15,000 bill every few years for media blasting and high-end stains. If the logs have started to rot or the chinking is failing, the metal siding is often the only thing that saves the house from eventually becoming a total loss.
I usally try to steer clients toward a high-quality restain first, but some guys are just done with the wood. If you do go the metal route, you have to be religious about the **air gap** behind those furring strips. If you trap moisture between the new metal skin and the old logs, you’re just creating a giant rot chamber. We usually leave a small gap at the bottom and top to ensure some airflow, otherwise, you're asking for a massive structural failure in a decade. The custom flashing around the windows is the real test of a carpenter on these. Since log walls are never a consistent thickness, you end up doing a lot of field-bending with a brake to get those wraps to look right. It’s a specialized niche for sure. It might not be the "pure" way to treat a log home, but for a client who wants to spend thier retirement relaxing instead of power washing, it’s hard to argue with the results.
That air gap part is interesting. As someone just starting to learn about framing, how do you keep critters from getting into that space if you leave gaps at the top and bottom? I’d be worried about wasps or mice moving into that "rot chamber" you mentioned.
Also, is a metal brake somethig a beginner coud acutally figure out, or is that one of those tools that takes years to master? I've seen them at the rental shop but they look pretty intimidating for a small project.
To the OP's point about the 'soul' of the cabin—I felt the same way the first time I buzzed off those tails. But after seeing a few where the owner didn't keep up with maintenance and the bottom logs turned into wet cardboard, you realize the metal is often an act of mercy.
For the critter issue, we usally staple fine stainless steel mesh over those vent gaps. It lets the air move but keeps the wasps out. Also, don't forget the outlet extensions. Since you’re adding depth with furring, you’ve got to box out every single exterior plug and light fixture. It’s tedious work that usually gets overlooked in the bid.
How did you handle the jamb extensions on those windows? Adding the furring strips and the metal adds a ton of depth, which usually leaves the windows looking like they’re buried in a cave. I always end up spending way too much time building custom box extensions just to bring the trim out flush with the new siding. Also, for the guy asking about the brake—it’s not rocket science, but you’ll defintely ruin a few hundred bucks in coil stock before you get a clean bend. Buy extra material and practice your hems first.
One thing I always watch for on these metal retrofits is the fastener tension. If you're using exposed-fastener panels, it's so tempting to drive those screws til the gaskets pancake, but you really have to back off a hair. On a long wall, that metal grows and shrinks like crazy between a cold morning and a hot afternoon. If they're too tight, you’ll hear the 'oil-canning' pops and bangs inside the house all day.
Did you go with a clip system or just direct-screw thru the ribs? ussually, the hidden clips handle the expansion better on these uneven log surfaces.
