Linux / OMV login issue?

My little RPi 2B has been running OpenMediaVault NAS software for quite some time now and using an external (USB2) 4TB laptop drive.

It was really only a temporary experiment (into low power network storage) but has provided a very stable and useable performance solution.

I'm not sure what caused it, possibly an update of Rasbian (Linux) or of OMV itself (via it's Web GUI) but now I can only login locally, or via SSH, I can't get into the main admin Web interface. ;-(

I think it signs in as such (authenticates the Web user / password), just then it seems to crash out with the following:

Failed to connect to socket: No such file or directory Error #0: exception 'OMV\Rpc\Exception' with message 'Failed to connect to socket: No such file or directory' in /usr/share/php/openmediavault/rpc/rpc.inc:140 Stack trace: #0 /var/www/openmediavault/rpc/session.inc(56): OMV\Rpc\Rpc::call('UserMgmt', 'authUser', Array, Array, 2, true) #1 [internal function]: OMVRpcServiceSession->login(Array, Array) #2 /usr/share/php/openmediavault/rpc/serviceabstract.inc(124): call_user_func_array(Array, Array) #3 /usr/share/php/openmediavault/rpc/rpc.inc(86): OMV\Rpc\ServiceAbstract->callMethod('login', Array, Array) #4 /usr/share/php/openmediavault/rpc/proxy/json.inc(95): OMV\Rpc\Rpc::call('Session', 'login', Array, Array, 3) #5 /var/www/openmediavault/rpc.php(45): OMV\Rpc\Proxy\Json->handle() #6 {main}cd

Now that means nothing to me but it looks like I'm not alone with the issue but none of the 'fixes' I've Googled to and tried, work for me (even if they worked for some others etc). FWIW though, the file (rpc.inc) that I think it says is missing seems to be there.

I've also tried all relevant options via 'omv-firstaid' with no improvement.

Now, assuming I can't find a simple admin/user fix, should it be possible for me to install a fresh copy of OMV and re-establish the existing shares?

I can still access the shares so I'm backing them up to my new Synology Diskstation (partly to give that a workout as well) so all would not be lost if I couldn't re-assign the existing shares, but I'd thought I'd ask.

Cheers, T i m
