Think you'll find some CAD machine tools still use RS323 as its very robust, and you can have quite long cables with it. Unlike USB. It's also the standard with aftermarket car ECUs like MegaSquirt.

I have others scattered round the house. This is for packing with the laptop.
Indeed. In fact, for USB generally.
That's what it is. I have a number of things I use that require the standard DE-9 serial (RS-232) connector.
Lots of things. At the moment, for demo-ing my SBC-6120, which has a serial port for its console. Also useful for my real PDP-11s and VAXes.
The trouble is that every time I have a clearout and throw out things that have lain arounbd for years (even a couple of decades) without use, you can guarantee that within a week I'll be doing something and think, "this would be a lot easier with xyz. I know I've got one of them. Oh shit, I threw it away!"
It happens every single time :(

I found its quicker and easier to order one from Amazon than remember where I put it.
That typically means stopping 'til at least the next day though, when I could have just carried on if I hadn't thrown it out!

Assuming you know where you put it and can still find it and don't have to spend the next few days searching for it, when it would be so much simpler to buy new.
Should work without a battery in on mains supply...
I found a multimeter more informative :-)
Hmmm what purposes have you got in mind for the now unportable, unviewable ?
That's a Mazda isn't it?
