Around 6 inches square with slits to enable waste to drain through. I need to lift from time to time when it gets blocked.
I could do with a hooked tool, to drag it out of the small oit it sits in. I have searched but I am not coming up with correct tool. Must be my search terms.
Any ideas?

Part of the handle of a standard plastic bucket can be bent to an angle of slightly less than 90 degrees and a length just shorter than a slot in the drain cover. It is stiff enough to apply a bit of force if the cover is stuck.
A suitable tool for lifting sludge from the bottom of the drain is a wooden handle attached to one of those little right-angle panels for adding a couple of switches to a 1960s car, though they may be a bit difficult to come by now.
Yes, gripped by a Mole or similar, pliers may not give a good enough grip if the cover is stuck.
Not really strong enough. OK if it's all clean and the cover just drops into place, but a couple of years of service as a kitchen drain will add some unidentifiable but strong glue to it.
A bucket handle is stiff enough to need tools to bend it to a sharp angle.
I have two suitable tools - one on the end of each arm! Wear Marigolds if you're squeamish.
Yes, I use a screw driver to ease up an edge and then use my hands to lift the cover out.
I use a prong on a garden fork.
