Just replaced an RCD

I've just replaced an RCD which had failed. It was 63a 2-pole, between the meter and the main distribution board, in its own box. The only one I could get was 80a, but I can't see any problem with that? Both 30 ma.

I tightened the terminals and checked for heating up with everything switched on.

What have I missed?

BTW, I had to pull the main fuse - the one with the electricity company seals. Is that a big problem? Well, I didn't have to, but I thought it was a good idea....

Higher maximum current is fine...

Nothing really - perhaps except the option to get rid of the "whole house RCD" and go for something more granular.

Its not a problem in practice... there was a time a meter reader might reseal it for you, but chances are they won't bother these days.

The place is being CPO'd at the end of March, and they'll knock it down, so there's not a lot of incentive.

Thanks for the reassurance.

Not IME, for years the meter reader never noticed/bothered that mine were missing, they were replaced without comment (along with a 60 to

100A fuse upgrade due to me having upped the tails from 16 to 25mm^2) when the meter was replaced.

Snap, I fitted a 2-pole isolator switch at the same time, so I won't need to do it again.

Not telling me before you fitted it:-). I have spare ones knocking about and I would have sent you a free one (but I assume this was an urgent swap)

I am curious - were you going to work live? No-one cares about the seals been cut as long as the bills are paid.

Very kind of you, but this was indeed an urgent swap.

No, I was not going to work live! :)
