Hmm, so my bottle of 'Medex Hand sanitiser Expert Plus' is useless in this situation as I believe is only 40% alcohol? ;-(

So is it that soap and hot water works because the combination is pretty powerful (against Covid-19) and when you don't have access to that, you have to use other stuff that seems more chemically?

Thanks for that. Again, I wasn't sure if there was a particular combination (of components) that was more effective but it seems it's just a compromise between killing the virus, making the solution more 'handelable' and caring for your hands.

Well, as you say, by diluting it but if at less than 100% it's still as effective, then why wouldn't you (somehow?) to make it go further?

I see the price of IPA has doubled (to over £2000/tonne) recently and is getting difficult to obtain, even at a commercial user level. ;-(

That would be my understanding

Unscrew the top and gingerly waft your hand across the open top, in the direction of your nose (a bit like a royal wave!). If you can smell a decent amount of chlorine, it's still got life in it. But don't just stick your nose in the top and sniff.

Hot water and soap works because the soap disrupts the oily outer surface of the virus, in just the same way alcohol does. But sometimes it's just more convenient to carry a few wipes around in a sealed bag, rather than having to seek out a hand basin.

What you say is absolutely correct, but I'm not sure that it's as straightforward as that. I've many times opened sealed bottles of bleach which have been left in a garage for months (particularly over warmer months) and there is little if any smell of chlorine.

Bleach is so cheap and universally available (although perhaps not under the current lunacy...) that it is hardly worth trying to store it.

Can the chlorine diffuse through the plastic? Are glass containers any better? Rhetorical questions, I don't really expect an answer.

Funnily enough I wondered about that myself. From the introduction at

So although these are extremes, it seems to me that chlorine and hypochlorite could attack polythene. I would guess that glass is better, but then it would let light through, and if not in stored in a cupboard, I wonder if UV exposure would accelerate any decomposition?

eg, Heat plus soap plus running water trump sanitiser gel because that's cold and not running?
