Joining CAT5 cable

Is the system using iLink (firewire) or CAT 5 ? Firewire, at most, can only be run for around 5 metres, so if you need longer than that you might be in for a few problems. Do your systems have COM port connections ? If they do, then it is possible to connect them together using direct cable connection through UTP (unshielded twisted pair) or CAT 5 between them.

By PS2 I mean two Sony PlayStation 2s which can use iLink (which is indeed firewire) to connect. The total run will probably be about 10m but I figure it'll probably work (if it doesn't it's not the end of the world). Intend to have iLink cable spliced into two with RJ45 connector on it at each end going in to an RJ45 wall socket which in turn is connected by CAT5 cable.

Then you're asking for problems. Firewire is only good up to a max' of 5 mtrs and the use of CAT 5 to transfer the signal from Firewire to Twisted Pair and then back again is not really going to make anything work properly.

Don't think there's a problem running video over much longer distances than this - given the correct cable. But 5 decent 'BNC' cables would make for a rather thick snake...

Well I'm going for a couple of 4 pin firewire plugs bought from the US whcih I will put on teh ends of a CAT 5 cable and hope the electrons are kind to me :)

Or bought it, these are fairly common for fixed installations or exhibition use. i.e.

Belkin Pro Series High Integrity Monitor Extension Cable 25m = £40 / 60m = £90, although their claim that 'it makes the flow of data faster' sounds a bit amazing.

Used them before, and they do seem to work just like a 2m cable, although it is unlikely one would need to run a screen at 1280 85Hz in this application.
