some new neighbours have moved in across the road......

The previous owners had a tree taken down by tree surgeons in front garden next to block paved driveway as it was blocking sunlight to house

The previous owners left the stump rather than have it ground out.

The new neighbours discover the stump and some tree roots in the border next to edge of block paved driveway after moving in.

A friend of theirs turns up with an engine hoist on wheels and some bolt cutters.

The engine hoist is this one:

He digs around the stump. Lashes the chains around the thicker roots emanating from stump. wheels up the engine hoist along driveway and connects up the chains.

Householder then starts manually pumping the hydraulic hoist.

Resistance is met after stump partially lifts out of the ground

Friend goes in with the bolt cutters.... then suddenly the hyraulic hoist rebounds into the air at the sudden release of tension as the last stubborn root is severed....

How one of them never got smacked in the face with the metal arm of the hydraulic hoist I'll never know!

There are now sopme blocks pushed into the sharp sand where the engine hoist had been used........

Quite a few Youtube videos showing how to remove a tree stump with the use of a vehicle. The result is usually the same, either the small stump comes out of the ground and straight into the back window of the vehicle or the chain or rope snaps and whiplashes through the back window.

I'm *very* wary of the amount of stored energy in a stretched rope when doing this sort of thing, chain is better because it doesn't stretch (much) and thus doesn't store nearly as much energy though of course there may still be quite a bit of energy stored in bent roots and branches.

Similarly one has to be very careful if felling a leaning tree, loads of energy in that waiting to go somewhere.

3 doors down the road, a builder went to remove a tree obstructing entrance for a new house. What he didn't know was that the tree roots had grown up round the electricity feeder. There was big bang and we lost mains power for 5 days. There was a genny in our drive - arrived at 2am!
