Is there anyone with no jobs left to do?

For the past few years with work and home I have often found myself with an almost panic inducing DIY to-do list.

I was joking with the missus yesterday that it won't be much longer before all my jobs are done.

Has that happened for anyone? Is it even a thing? Is it a good or bad feeling?

I'm not a quarter of the way through and by next month I won't be a fifth of the way through. If you've got spare time and ability on your hands ...

That's okay, things will start wearing out and needing to be replaced soon.

If they don't, Mrs RDS will decide they're unfashionable now anyway and demand modernising. Give it another six months and we'll be hardboarding our panelled doors again as the mouldings harbour coronavirus.

Or you could sell the house and buy a new one with a whole new list of to-dos.

My problem isn't DIY, it's GYDTDI.

Only people without a wife have no jobs left to do. She has a hidden list.

I find it easier to start another job than finish the numerous half-completed ones :-(

Plus a few I bet.

I guess that can be both a function of what range of things you can do (opening up more things) or what range of things you are interested in.

Like, you might fix your own motorbike (skills, tools, interest) but not fix your own car, simply because you aren't interested in them in that way (even if you might be able to do so).

I have probably *hundreds* of un-started / finished projects here so it's often just a matter of doing the most pressing or whatever would give us the best result for the least input (time / effort / cost).

And that's not just here and for me / us, it's also my Mum, daughter and various friends. ;-(

And I don't know if I would like to be up to speed. Whilst it might be nice that I am, all I would do is find more things to be behind on.

That's why I have never been able to understand people who don't have hobbies, interests or do stuff themselves, and not just because of lack of cash. [1]

They go to work, go to Benidorm for two weeks a year and that seems to be it?

[1] It's a weird situation ... you are at some event (family / community) and are talking to someone in general, especially youth ... 'so, what are you into ...?' ... 'Erm, nothing really'... they don't even seem to say 'music' any more? It has saddened me to learn just how many things some of the youth haven't done or don't do (camping / cycling / hobbies etc).

It's also a whole lot easier to maintain a motorcycle than a car. When I owned a motorcycle I used to do all the routine maintenance such as changing the oil, adjusting the timing and tappets. (I avoided the carburettors as there were two and I thought they might get out of balance.) I also replaced the throttle cable once and fitted a side stand. With a motorcycle you can reach everywhere and don't have to crawl under it. With a car about all I did was replace the battery and wipers. And fit a radio/cassette and wire the headlights so they went off with the ignition and fit an immobiliser that shorted out the points until I pressed a concealed button.

It can be. Ever had a fully fairing bike though, or a modern scooter?

Yup, the easy fettling jobs.

True, but I made a basic balancer of some clear plastic tube filled with 2/ oil and it worked a treat. ;-)

But you still often have to take load of stuff off to get to other things. Like removing the saddle, tank, fuel tap and a lot of cooling components, just to get to the rocker cover?

Changing the oil and filter can be as easy or even easier on some cars.

;-)
