Is old toilet resalable?

I recently replaced an old toilet with a new one, I was about to take it to the dump when a friend told me that some people pay a lot of money for old toilets. I think it was installed new in approx 1968, it's a white low level unit marked Royal Doulton vitreous china on the pan and on the tank. I can't imagine that it's worth anything. What does the team think? Regards Tom

Nah. nor would I! I think by 'old' your really looking at quite a bit older than that. I believe 1950's ones are beginning to be sought after now, but I think a late '60s one isn't worth worrying about. Dump!

By the way - a useful tip to anybody wondering whether whatever it is they are about to dump might actually be worth something to somebody is to search for the item on ebay, under 'Completed Items'. I can pretty well guarantee that *whatever* the item is, it will be there; if you see loads of them listed at 99p starting price and no takers, then there's your answer!

Ah, but don't forget the golden rule of uk.d-i-y, though, which is not to act upon the first bit of advice you receive... after you've been down the tip this afternoon, you might find somebody else posts this afternoon with "Wow!! a genuine Royal Doulton from 1968!! - collector's item! Name your price!"

A couple of years ago, there was an article in a local Luton newspaper about a guy who collects the old loos. Insurance companies buy them off him in cases where someone chips some part of the bathroom suite and then claims they need the whole lot replacing. I think it was sinks he did too. I don't have any pointers, but it might be worth a google search if you're in that area. I think it would only be of interest if the one you have is some colour other than white (when clean;-).

It was somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the drugs began to take hold. I remember "Tom" saying something like:

You'd get a crap price for it.

Couple of years ago I took out a really old Armitage bog... thought it might be worth a few quid, but it fell to bits :( lots of tiny cracks.

One of those old cast iron cisterns is worth a bit, though.

If your local houshold waste site does recycling take it there for someone to reuse.

At our local household waste site they do recycling by selling at very reasonable prices items brought in for disposal. Many local people benefit from this especially for the supply of spare parts that would otherwise be unobtainable or prohibitivly expensive.

There is always a good selection sanitary ware on display, much of it the relativly modern 'avacado suite' style once so popular -I can't imagine why-, so I suppose they must resell some. I have bought a wash basin there for the taps. Think it cost me two pounds or something.

The problem being of course if you damage only one part of an avocado suite, you can't get a new one any more - I would think this is why they manage to sell them at the recycling place.
