Is my Heating oil delivery man conning me?

Hi all,



I have a Titan Cylindrical Home Heating oil tank but there's no markings on the side to say how mush is in the tank. The only way I can tell how much is in there is by shining a torch in and looking at how far the level is from the slight rib in the tank.



I did get a pr1270mm height 1190mm depth. The capacity is 1300 liters.



I've ordered 500liters. Where should the Oil Level be, e.g. how high up the tank?

Dunno as im crap at maths, but you need to make up a dip stick, just a length of wood a little taller than the tank, i'm sure someone can tell you where to mark the stick to relate to hundereds of litres based on the size of the tank,

but even without that, you can dip the tank before a delivery, mark where it comes to, then do again after the delivery.

That depends how much there was in there in there before it was filled. If there was, say, 150 litres in there then it should be 1/2 way up (assuming the tank isn't some strange shape).

I doubt if you can get a remotely accurate reading that way.

Unless you dipped it, you can't be sure of that.

No sight tube? I thought a sight tube had been a legal requirement on oil tanks for a long time.

Depends how much oil was in it before the delivery. As another poster said use a dip stick if you don't have a sight tube.

Well 500 l / 1300 l is 0.385 so it should fill 0.385 of the tanks depth. or 458 mm if the sizes are accurate.

To be precise: (500/1300) * 1270 = 488.46mm from bottom of tank

As has been said You will have to get a dip reading before and after to get a reading. If your tank is a vertical cylinder and you can find out the internal diameter you'll be able to calculate the expected change in depth for 500 litres using the following formula

Change in depth in cm = 640,000 / diameter^2 with diameter measured in cm. (not mm)

If the cyclinder is horizontal you'll need to know the exact depth before and after.

The Titan 1300l tanks are stood on end so this is correct, except that there will be a dead area under the outlet of, say 40mm, so from run out to 500l in would probably give a dipstick reading of about 500. In fact, given the dead area has to be subtracted, it looks as though the tank is designed to (roughly) give 1mm/l on a dipstick of usable oil - not a bad idea

If the tank is a regular shape, the height of the tank is 1270mm and it holds 1300 litres, it's near as makes no difference to 1 litre per mm of depth.

If you've had an additional 500 litres, the level should have gone up by around 500mm. Assuming that the capacity measurement leaves no headroom, the depth should actually have increased by 488mm - but 12mm is probably too fine a measurement to worry about.

You'll need some sort of dipping stick - I'd mark it every 100mm. Every

100mm equals 100 litres, roughly - 102 litres to be a little more precise but the dipping method is probably not going to be acurate to that degree anyway.

Unless the tank sides are vertical it is difficult to calibrate even with a dipstick. In any case the meters are sealed and regularly tested by Trading Standards. You are unlikely to have been conned.

That depends on which figure is the correct one as height and depth should be the same but aren't.

Height is top to bottom, depth is the front to back dimension and provided it is constant has no bearing on the OP question and the answer provided.

It's been 40 years since I took delivery of heating oil, but isn't it metered in much the same way as a petrol pump? Just ensure the driver zeros the meter before delivery.

Doesn't really matter! If he overtly uses a dipstick before and after the delivery, I doubt he'll be conned...

That's the advantage of a rectangular metal tank - though mine does bulge slightly when full.

Your maths teacher at school was more likely to have been conning you than your oil supplier. Well I say that but I have no real idea if he actually said he could take someone even less intelligent than Sarah Palin and still teach them basic arithmetic. I could be libelling him unjustifiably.

Tank gauging systems for big storage tanks rely on strapping tables. The tank is filled to a set level and the product measured as it goes in. Check at 100mm intervals. This gives a profile of the tank that can be used to calculate the quantity of product less allowances for water bottom. Takes account of the distortion of the tank walls which is different for every tank. Usually done before the tank goes into operation. You could easily do this for a domestic tank on installation.
