Ikea forgot to tell me

I would guess that the dimples simply served as a suggestion - allowing you free to choose somewhere else (a lot better than drilling holes all the way through).

Why wouldn't it?

You might need to push harder, to transmit the same force to the latch, given the smaller distance from the hinge, but...

He could make dummy handles out of cardboard and stick 'em on with bluetack first to get a rough idea what looks good.

Hate to disturb what was becoming an enertaining thread, but you need one of their templates:

Top tip is to mark the template on the hole you use for the first one, then you can be consistent through the rest (so long as you're careful and consistent in placing the template). Not artistic really though....

Personally I put the handles as close as possible to the hinges.

Some Ikea cabinets must suit the minimalist look, so best to put the handles inside the cupboards.

Put them right in the middle, then strangers don't know which way they open and get a surprise.

Put them on the inside for a laugh.

that's where the push bits are, where the handles would go. Handles arewn't on the same side as the hinge, that would be silly.
