identifying a spotlight bulb

New house has those inset spotlights all over the place*. One of them has gone, but it has absolutely no identifying marks other than a small 'M' near the pins. It's quiteheavy and made of glass. What different kinds are there? I guess I should measure the voltage as I think there's a transformer somewhere judgeing by the buzzing when I lower the dimmer. Also, any known cheap sources of these online?

Thanks

John

*which are going to look very dated quite soon if you ask me.

2" wide? 5"? Type of connector? Give us a clue here! PAR38 and GU10 both sound like what you describe, but are as similar as lead and festhers.

You say pins, do you mean tiny pins that stick straight out of the back? And to remove it, you just pull straight forward with no twisting?

Either way, most B&Qs have got quite a big bulb section, with all of them on display (or at least, they can be, if you take them out the box :>) so you can compared.
