Because over hindreds of years carpenters have elminated all the possible combinations of woopd and nails that do, and stick with the ones that don't.
Houses hold together by weight alone, mainly. The nails simply stop the bits of wood sliding relative to one another.
There is very little tension in any part of a house structure...the exception being the joists that should connect the roof rafters at their bases. It is not uncommon for bolts to be specified at these points..certainly the parts of my hose that take tension are ALL specified with blts or coach screws to keep them together.
Prior to their inevention, use of morticed joints and pegs was the only way to do it.
It does, if there is any leak in the roof, or if there is no vapour barrier between the inside and the insulation.
I have experienced living proof of that...

Regs are over the top IMHO, but they have to cater for worst case stuff, like people exhausting bathroom fans into the loft space etc.
The nails are good enough in shear to take small lateral loads. The secrete is to arrange the structure so that is all they do get.
A basic truss - triangale - with load on it puts the rafters in compression but the base tie in tension. As far as rafters-to-ridge goes, you could stick them up with blutack. Once tiled the weight wedges them together.
You have to take care at the base though..normally the horizontal part of an A frame is in heavy tension, and plates, lots of nails or bolts are used.
But a house is not engineered down to minimum weight, it is totally overengineered and the limiting factor is more structural deflection than gross failure.

oh, indeed. If you buy premade trusses you can end up with a very minimal structure,,and a totally useless space you cant convert for anything, due to the preponderance of cross bracing. And it looks juts like very other house in the estate, same pitch, no hips, not even a valley in site.

Yep. My rented house is just like that. I even had great difficultly in positioning a large TV aerial in the loft. Didn't feel I could screw it to any of the cross braces (too thin) - screwed it to a floorboard.
Hardly room to swing it for alignment before it clouts summat.
Which is why my next house will be as old as possible - pre-60's at least for solidity, though I'm rather taken by Kentish 19th century cottages. I'd love an oast house, but until I win the lottery...
