How do i treat wood that is soft through weather exposure

I have a wooden facia around my house and in patches the paint has gone flakey. The wood underneath the flakey patches has gone slightly soft through exposure to the weather. What is the best way of treating these soft patches and what is the best method of repainting it.

Thanks

If the patches are small best to cut them out and fill with a epoxy filler. There are also resin treatments that soak into the wood and harden it up. To be honest though the best thing to do is cut out the bad bits and joint in some new wood. Saves time and money in the end and its less difficult than you might think.

At our last house some of the exterior woodwork was very rotten and soft when we bought it. A very severe shortage of funds meant we couldn't afford to replace so I soaked the affected areas with wood preservative followed by wood hardener and filler and finishing with Ronseal exterior woodstain. Five years later when we came to sell all the woodwork was still fine. We sometimes drive past now and though it's been repainted it seems to be the same wood.
