How big is Cyprus?

Jun 24, 2017 12 Replies

I wonder how big Cyprus would have to be to supply one sack of spuds for every other greengrocer's in Britain?

Say you got a sack from (at a wild guess) 100 feet row and say 1.5 feet between rows. Say 12 spuds a week from each plant. I have no idea but it seems to me a degree of fraud must be going on if the rest of the common market also sells spuds from Cyprus.

They have been selling them since the start of summer as far as I know. Maybe they are confusing Cypruss with Texas? Should someone tell someone?

Potatoes are one of the highest yielding crops. Cyprus has over 6,000 hectares under potato cultivation and that produces over 150,000 tonnes a year.

HTF did you find that out? At 20 tonnes to the lorry load that is only 7500 deliveries. Fancy them onl y supplying the Midlands and North Wales. I should buy more.

BTW what variety are Cyprus potatoes?

Google.

Of the 1.2 million tonnes of potatoes we imported last year, only 16,000 tonnes came from Cyprus. Imports are most likely to come from France, Germany and the Netherlands, who are the three top exporters of potatoes in the world.

UK produces about 6 million tonnes a year

For whom the CAP works wonders, just not the UK...odd that innit?

We grow rape instead for German biofuels..hahahaha

I am surprised that we can't seem to get anything from North Africa. All their pickers have probably emigrated. Just like the Polish picktaters now picking orders at British catalogue companies. Rather them than me.

hahahaha? Seriously?

How long did you think about not posting hahahaha?

Please don't let me stop you doing it again... but...

I'd imagine they stagger the planting and get them all year around.

What is this to do with DIY - stop this off topic posting as per group charter

This group doesn't have a charter.

The OP is obviously wondering whether there is a profit to be made by growing his own potatoes and rebranding them. Definitely a DIY project there.
