Hob igniter problem

We have a pretty old Creda gas hob with a button at the front which you depress to get a spark under each burner. The button rotates and removes to reveal one of those tiny cylindrical 12V batteries.

It's ceased to work. I'd be happy to light it by hand but SWMBO says no.

I've checked the four igniters for crud, but no go.

Anyone any experiences/ideas please?

there are 3 parts to fail: 1 sparker, 2 HV wiring, 3 spark gaps. Test 1 alone with a makeshift spark gap added. Do NOT get bitten by the spark.

We used to have one of those... it normally failed due to a poor contact between the cap and the side of the battery compartment. There was a metal tab in the cap that was supposed to make contact when pushed, and complete the circuit. Needless to say it got dirty / tarnished from time to time. So removing it and cleaning the contacts (and the battery contacts etc used to fix it)

I did think of that but didn't actually have a go. I will!

Thanks
