Here is a DIY chair video.

A few seconds in, I though "That radial arm saw looks familiar" and clicked through to it on YouTube and sure enough, I've watched a few of Frank's other videos ...

The frustrating thing for many of us who do make things, is seeing other peoples work, craft and skill being completely ignored ... un-valued.

Like when you see people dumping (not adapting or finding an alternative use for) something that is still fundamentally sound and was originally well / hand made etc. ;-(

Or when you take a piece of hand made gold jewellery in for a valuation and they just chuck it on the scales and tell you it's current value by weight.

Staying on that point, I saw a program where a guy who made furniture 'by hand' (in the woods) was asked how much one of his chairs was. He said "I just charge £10/hour for my time and that chair took 50 hours to make."

So, the person buying it would have to appreciate that to justify spending £500 on a chair where they might be able to get something similar that has come from a factory (along with 1000 the same) for a fraction of that price.

The thing is, because it seems we are being pushed down the line of keeping up with trends and fashion, I'm not sure many today want or intend to keep hold of good / quality things and except to pass them down though the family.

My sister had a big sideboard she got though the family and because it had sentimental value but didn't really have need for it as it was, so she had it chopped down and made it into something she could use and had some of the surplus material worked into a fire surround they had made up. So it lives on as such, albeit in a slightly different form and making use the good quality materials.
