I need some info for a quick simple general guide for beginners. The questi on is what hole size to predrill hardwoods before nailing. If at all possib le it needs to be a single size for all hardwood types and all nails, eg ha lf the nail diameter. Is life that simple? :)

Nobody nails into hardwood . Plain nails hold very badly in most hardwoods.
I'm fairly certain that "pine" is not an animal. Unless you're thinking of the pine marten? They don't take particularly kindly to being drilled or nailed, though.
