grohe thermostatic shower prob

Elderly grohe built in thermostatic shower valve has no temperature adjustment following a retile of the shower enclosure....

All that occurred was the two knobs were removed & fascia plate, retile, knobs back on....

New thermostatic cartridge is 70 odd on ebay...

Odd to me that s retile can cause it to fail?

Any pointers for what else to check? How to test it? Etc

TIA

Have you tried vigorous turning from one end of the temperature range to the other?

You might find all it needs is dismantling and a good descaling with vinegar.

Who done the work? The reason I ask is when I redone my ensuite a while back The water to the shower was capped off (by a plumber) and I think a valve turned off in the attic not sure if it was hot or cold. Anyhow it took me a while to fathom it out and get it working again as the temp was way off when it was reinstated.

Another thing which happened later on when I had to replace the cartridge when it was all reassembled the water was not warm enough. I probably wont explain this properly but I had to take the temp control knob off in a certain position then turn the temp control knob while off (if that makes sense) and then put it back on, this was so that the balance of hot and cold was altered. This was all about 10 years back so apologies if a bit vague.

THink this is normal. The possible range of turning is far more than the

270 degrees or so that these valves turn between the stops. So if you take the knob off there is probably a cam or stop below. Remove that and the knob will turn the full (multi turn) range. Adjust tempreture to get a reasonable mid-point value then replace the stop,

Yup, and manually depressing the 'plunger' on the end of the thermostatic cartridge, nothing seems to make much difference to the water temp.

Boiler is a newish combi (but shower worked OK with it before retile); DHW set to 47c, no matter what shower is set to water temp is around 34 to 37c.... Am I right thinking max temp I should get should be near 47c, min should be 'cold' (assuming control knob is removed so adjustment is unlimited??

Yes sounds correct but I can't change temps reliably even running it without the stops in use.....

What's the failure mode for thermo shower valves? I believe this one is wax.....
