Burt I was of course talking of normal operation. There is no such thing as normal operation with a wind farm.

Every day is a new advebnrure into unreliability and the only reliable thing is how much you are going to stiff the customer for.

Still it looks like that may be coming to an end..

I can see some point in doing that.

Interconnectors come in monopole (using earth as you describe) or bipole versions, since the conductor sizes TNP had mentioned were with the assumption of a twin cable, that's what I used.

Pretty different to me as well. Even if you convert to a grey scale they (Proposed (orange) and In Progress (green)) are different. In Progress (green) and Existing (blue) are rather close in greyscale though.

Why do I get the feeling some one is about to find out they have some form of colour blindness. Google Ishihara test.

I just checked and the BritNed one is 2 pole, but it's 260 km rather than 125 km, so double those losses again!

However that doesn't add-up, they say 1430mm^2 of copper per conductor, I think TNP halved that to give 715mm^2 for each pole, but then that'd only weigh 12 kg/m not the quoted 44 kg/m

So probably it's two 43mm diameter conductors (each 1460mm^2) per cable, so you can half the losses again!

Still leaves 14kg/m for insulation and (steel?) reinforcement.

My colour sight is rubbish: I can usually work out what a colour is if I can place it side-by-side with a known colour but otherwise it often could be anything. So I couldn't tell you, without a lot of hard work, what the colours on the Grauniad chart actually are but I can see enough difference between them to know which line is which. I know you've been fiddling with the monitor but is there any chance you could look at the diagram on another monitor instead?

One of the problems would be that there are only three manufacturers of undersea cable in Europe, they all have full order books for a good number of years to come and the technical problems they have had to overcome make it highly unlikely that anyone else could enter the market for at least a decade.

Firstly, I wouldn't have got into such a ludicrous situation. I'd have assumed sweeping dicatator powers, imprisoned or re-educated the oppositions and killed all the NIMBYs. Then, I'd have built many pumped seawater storage plants on the coasts of Wales and Scotland. When there's a downturn in wind, the pumped storage would suffice.

Along with this, there would be a series of new conventional nuke plants; with the idea of moving nuke to thorium in due time.

Allied to this, of course, there would be a Draconian system of penalties for power wasters... public flogging or losing an eye or forehead branding might do it.

I am sure the germans will do one for you...:-)

Why is geothermal energy not renewable ?

Because the rock around any given bore-hole eventually cools down to the point where it's no longer usable and we have to drill another one. If the thermal conductivity of the rock is poor, this happens sooner rather than later.

But isn't *some* geothermal energy created by expansion/contraction of the earth due to gravity ?

There may be some due to tides raised in the earth's crust by the sun and the moon (I'm not talking about ocean tides). Prolly not enough to cancel the Huge effect.

There's plenty of ongoing heat being released at depth due to the radioactivity of the earth's core. When the earth was very young, it was hit by a Mars-sized small planet, which melted the Earth completely and threw up enough s*it from the surface for it to condense and form the moon. At that time, the moon was quite close to the earth and able to raise tides some kilometres high, never mind a few piffling feet in the River Severn.

Also as a result of this collision, the iron core of the Mars sized object fused with the earth's core and thus made a larger core. Because of all the surface rocks that formed the moon, the earth has a much thinner crust than other comparable planets - so we get plate tectonics. We also have a large moon (relative to the earth's size) which stabilises the earth's spin axis. Lucky really, and both important factors to help life along.

Finally, because the earth melted at collision time, almost all the heavy metals (including uranium) sank down towards the core. Which is why its radioactive. Some was left in surface rocks but presumably comparatively little.

If the rock around the bottom of the bore hole is cooled due to our extracting heat from it, I suppose it could be left to heat up again - or you limit the heat extraction rate to maintain equilibrium.

Abundant? I'm not an expert but the US is the world's largest producer of geothermal electricity and only has 3GW of capacity in total.

AIUI geothermal energy requires fracking - I'm not sure how easily this sits with Guardian readers' views.
