Grandfather movement with a coil gong

May 13, 2006 3 Replies

Gah! How hard can it be to find a grandfather clock movement that doesn't do a poor plink-plink imitation of Big Ben?

Any guidance on locating a movement for a grandfather clock that has a coild gong is greatly appreciated. Hermle only seem to do a wall clock movement with a coil. Kieninger seem to have one, though their website is pretty poor so it's not obvious that it's suitable for a grandfather. And their distributor in the UK (Craft Supplies) doesn't seem to have a grandfather version :-(

stuff, but no coil gongs on a large long-case movement.

I could try eBay, but if the movement doesn't work, then it's 500 quid (at least0 to get it fixed.

Why not just get the gongs from a dud clock and use a doorbell solenoid on a timeswitch (or a microswitch off the clockwork) to 'dong' them at the appropriate times?
