Generally a sealing compound is used on threaded taper fittings. The "compound" can be a liquid/paste or a suitable (gas) PTFE tape. So if the restrictor tube includes a BSP taper fitting then a sealing compound is required.

(Note that gas fire pipework can be done using just compression fittings, and while one can use lubricating / sealing compounds on these, its not required).

Gas grade PTFE tape (similar to that used on water fittings but thicker) is the most common sealing material[1]. Alternatively a compound like Jet-lube V-2 Plus paste would be an example of another typical product.

[1] As specified in BS 6891, "Installation of low pressure gas pipework of up to 35 mm (R1 1/4) in domestic premises (2nd family gas) ? Specification"

Normally yellow PTFE tape, I think. (The reel, not the tape).
