Garage Floor Smoothing

Not as big as a garage, but yes. IME 'Self Levelling Compound' should really be called 'Self Smoothing Compound'. Yes, it does flow, but it's quite viscous. I guess there are different types.

I would trowel on a thin layer just to see. Too thick sounds like trouble.

Sadly - or in your case gladly - self levelling isn't as levelling as it says on the tin Should work if done on small patches.

Just check that the self levelling screed is robust enough, many specify that they need to be covered and on their own are unlikely to survive a car driven over.

If it is just a case of repairing damaged patches I can recommend Toupret’s Concrete repair filler. I did a few repairs in my previous garage regularly driving an SUV over the repairs without any damage.

I expect I will need to fill the spalled areas to avoid dips in the covering, by which time I might as well try to level the floor in any case..

The spalling is significant in some areas and would need up-to 5mm thickness to fill I reckon.

I think I used that Toupret filler somewhere a few years ago, and found it seriously strong, so another vote from me. It is black in colour IIRC BTW.
