Furniture storage places

Anyone tried one of the "personal storage" warehouses, where you can put belongings into storage?

  • What's best to go for -- the more expensive personal storage firms with custom-built warehouses and web sites or the cheaper local yellow pages firm which offers storage?
  • The actual containers or rooms you store stuff in -- how big are they? Is it possible to cram stuff in to the roof and optimise the available space?

  • Costs -- how much for 8ft x 8ft container, for example?

  • Preparation -- Does everything need bubblewrapping?

Tips from anyone who has gone down this road are welcomed...

I had storage for about 4 months on a month by month basis. I think it was about 6ft x 10ft and about 11ft high. I packaged everything right up to the ceiling and managed to get most of my stuff in (2 bed house). Just had a step ladder as the last thing to go in so if I needed anything I would be able to unpack from the top. I think it cost about £100 a month including insurance as I couldn't find anywhere else that would provide insurance. With out insurance it would of cost about £90.

Depends who is packing or unpacking it.

Make sure you fill wardrobes/drawers once in position.

We`ve got a container rented on the outskirts of Liverpool that costs us=20 about =A3180 for 3 months. Its a full size shipping container (not sure=20 what they are, but its something like 8 foot by 20 foot I think, perhaps=20 more) and we`ve got a lot of crap we should probably just ebay off - its=20 in there until we get the house decorated :-}

In our case, it was simply a case of loading the car up and throwing the=20 stuff in ourselves - we didn`t bother to wrap anything, and for the=20 majority of things (books / cds / videos etc) they just went into cheap=20 packs of stackable crates - 40+ of the damn things :-}

We did get prices for the more specialised storage places, but they were=20 incredibly expensive and relatively tiny - we just took a trip around the= =20 local industrial estate and found a few places doing them a lot cheaper.

This might not be ideal if you wanted "secure" storage, and I have a=20 feeling ours is probably not insured, but you pays your money...
