Fun and games with Samsung fridge freezer

Fridge just died, so replaced with shiny new Which best buy Samsung.

Decided to reverse hinges, book has full details but also dire warnings about getting a man in.

M5 tapped holes on "other" side are covered by plastic sheet about 1 mm thick, no way of getting screw to get through "unaided". So, ran through a 4.2 mm drill. Tapped holes are there, but not very well tapped: screws stick half way. Out with M5 tap and remove a significant amount of metal. Also needed to increase clearance holes in brackets in order to get screws aligned.

Otherwise a nice bit of kit, but anyone without taps and a range of drills would have been stuffed. Ten minute job took half the evening.

Any chance the screws might have been trilobal thread forming screws? They don't look like conventional self tappers, superficially more like standard threads but would have felt tight when forming the thread. Just a thought.

They were camming out even with new bits.

Given the torque I had to apply with the tap wrench, there was no way self tappers or trilobes were going to work. The holes were clearly tapped because a first tap went in a significant distance. They just were not tapped sufficiently.

And the screws had flat tips which had no chance of penetrating the plastic anyway.

Not enough quality control by the sound of it. Brian
