Sounds like Waltham is your possible TX of choice.

Don't bother with Maplins they sell that Maxview stuff wouldn't give it chimney room. Triax, Antiference, Blakes or even Thelves are the makes to go for but more expensive but worth it.

You're right, they're not the cheapest, but they do have the advantage that you can walk into their store, and walk out with an aerial, rather than mucking about waiting in all day for one of the on-line suppliers' couriers to turn up.

Of course if you know of a cheaper or better retail outlet in Nottingham, let us know, I presume you don't or else you'd have posted its name ?

They are not that expensive especially if he goes for the one they do for £12.99( not high gain) which will work OK in the loft, especially if he is close to the Nottingham transmitter.

whether an aerial works in the loft, or not, is a function of what roofing material is used and how much clutter of pips etc there is up there.

Some of the dttv channels are high (eg Mux B on ch 63 & Mux 2 on ch 67) and could have serious difficulty in penetrating concrete tiles

A good quality wideband aerial will probably help. As it happens, whether you're using the main Waltham tramsmitter or the Nottingham relay MUX2 (containing the ITVchannels) will be furthest away from the band for your existing (presumably banded) aerial, so the ITV channels would be likely to disappear first under marginal conditions. I have sort of clay? tiles (not slate anyway) which are quite think and I manage OK, I am about 4 miles away with a signal strength of 50dB So he sould get soome sort of idea from that. Yea the top two muxes are the hardest, I get 98% quality on 63 currently 64% on 67. (98% is 100% in reality on my box). Now I have it positioned in a nice spot I very very rarely experience any probs. I have another aerial I could add in parrallel but its hardly worth the effort as any probs are very rare and brief and may be due to some other factor beyond my control. I might try it someday though, just out of interest though, as some spots are better for different muxes and I could porbably get

Maplin said they would take it back if it didn't work so I just tried the cheapest aerial and I found it to be OK. No point in spending another £30 or so.
