Yet another brilliant non-contribution from "Dave".

Over 12 months ago, I went for a free view box. We have an old communial aerial system and it was only just acceptable in my hobby room (amateur radio, computers and anything electronic) in the back upstairs bedroom.

After playing with it for a month, I moved it down to the lounge for my wife's comments. It rained and she gave up trying to use it.

After this (the normal terrestrial channels were getting lots of reflections) I decide to go for a wide band, high gain aerial. The aerial fitter came and looked at out situation and then told us that he had done a job at the flat in front of our house and that she was fine with TV reception. He did his checks, told us that we had a very tall tree in the line of path to our local transmitter and said he thought that he could get a good signal for us, as the tree was not quite in line with the transmitter.

A few hours later, there was £150-00 worth of aerial up a long pole and free view was fine in my hobby room.

When I bought a second free view box and installed it into the main TV set, it worked fine at first, then autumn came, the rain came with it and the leaves of the tree succeeded in spoiling viewing of both free view sets. Mine to a lesser extent. (Well, it is closer to the aerial)

After a long waffle to fill you in with what I have...

I would suggest that you look at the topography between your house and your best transmitter.

Will any trees get in the way of a signal? Do neighbours get a good signal (on digital) from the local transmitter? Have you any hills between you and your transmitter? Do you have any hills near you that could give you reflections that will put multiple images on screen (ghosting), or moving bars (one in phase and one lesser out of phase signal) etc?

Because of the above, I am now looking at a satellite dish for free view. Possibly sky free to air, cos I ain't paying that Ozzy *astard a penny I am told that it costs about £150-00 or so, but check with your local suppliers.

If you have a direct line of sight for a satellite, then barring very bad weather, you should get a signal at all times. (very bad weather can and does affect a satellite dish, but not as much as a terrestrial aerial.

I know you used to work for the BBC, Charles, so I guess you know things we don't. I didn't realise that the pips accumulated in the loft. After all these years of listening to the Radio Four news at 1pm our loft must be full of the things.

I assumed, Charles was talking about, Pipistrelle bats, if you have enough of them roosting in the loft they could attenuate the signal.

Young bats do not have a wingspan equal to half a wavelength, even on ch68. It's only when they get older that the trouble starts. But don't get in a flap about it.

I am a class act and a big tipper, so I would buy from a palace.

I used Unibond bathroom and shower sealant from the local shed. Expensive at 8 quid a go but it's so bloody waterproof it's v.difficult to smooth it after application 'cos it sticks to

The moral to this tale is if yer tray doesn't drop this stuff is good! IMO obviously.
