Floor varnishing question...

Sep 17, 2006 1 Replies

Hi Folks

Just had some new wooded floorbaords laid, stained & varnished as part of a building project. The stain is quite dark (Indian Rosewood), which is fine, but the vanish that's been applied on top is (a single coat of) clear gloss, which has made the floor a little too shiny.

My question is, if I apply a coat of clear matte varnish on top, will it take some of the edge off of the gloss? (without darkening the wood further).

Thanks in advance

Paul

Try going over it with a fine orbital sander, then wipe a *very* thin coat of gloss on with a rag. If it starts to gum up the sander, think again, but most modern varnishes will powder when sanded.
