Yup the key is not to heat the lead directly, and use the copper to transfer the heat. Keep that hot enough to melt the solder (> 180 deg C should be enough), and you should be able to do the joint. Point a blazing torch at the lead, and you might just have a puddle of lead where the pipe used to be!
