Fishy smell from combi boiler...

Just a quick question to confirm my thoughts.

My combi boiler has just starting making a "fishy" smell. I noticed it a little the other day and this morning the airing cupboard smelt like Fleetwood docks.

No jokes about the wife airing her undies in there please................

I think it's electric related as I once had a plug with a dodgy connection which smelled something similar and on searching the group most fishy comments seem to be related to electrics and bad connections.

Anyway, before I spend £170, anyone else got any ideas or should I just be better safe than sorry? It does seem to be working OK (i.e making the water hot and the heating works)

Cheers

A circuit board that is being heated by a faulty component could give off a smell. If there is nothing obvious I'd get it checked out asap.

We commonly get a fishy smell from our car's heating system when it first heats up (goes after a minute and nothing when heater is turned to cold). We believe it is a leaky heater maxtrix. Haven't got round to fixing it yet. The smell when opening the radiator cap is similar (and yes, we have flushed and renewed the coolant fluid and similar smell remained)

Our old bolier started making a similar smell which we traced to a the heat exchanger leaking/weeping. This was a very old boiler. The smell appeared to be caused by the chemicals in the system evaporating. Strange that the liquid itself didn't appear to smell of it though. Anyway, boiler replaced and smell went.

If your boiler is newish then it probably isn't that - but just thought I would give my 2p's worth. :)

On a lighter note, it could've been worse - it could've smelled like Isaac Spencer's not just Fleetwood Dock!

Hope you get your problem sorted though

Your inability to define your boiler renders me incapable of making an informed comment
