Faded plastic

I have the chance to get a good sturdy metal trike but the red mudguards are badly faded. Is there anything can be done to brighten them up? Paint would flake off, if there is a dye I sure it would be industrial strength and dangerous. I assume the polymers in it have faded and they can only be put in as it is being moulded.

Anybody ever tackle anything like this?

TIA Suzanne

Not necessarily, depending on the plastic it could wear ok.

"Armor-All" has a plastic care spray that may take care of this. It's a glop that will deepen the color on faded plastic, rubber etc. It won't work on all fading, though, rubbing a bit of spit on the surface will approximate the effect (though it's a lot more permanent than that!).

It'll last for a six months or so on the rubber trim on my car.

Other than that: cover-up decals? magic marker? spray-on shoe dye?

The fading may be only on the very surface. If this is so, then mechanically removing (sanding) the discoloured layer, followed by fine sanding to get it nice and smooth, and then polishing will work well, taking it back to 'as new' condition. On the flip-side, many 'weathered' plastics take paint much, much better than when new.

try t-cut, flash floor cleaner or t-cut with colouring in it. NT
