I've heard of Facebook, but that's about as far as it goes for me.

I even have an account, and login regularly once or twice a year just the keep my finger in the pulse!

I have an account but when in 2016 they demanded that I agreed to their new, data-protection-busting terms and conditions before they would let me sign in again I decided not to sign in again.

I heard that they pulled the same stunt in 2018 after GDPR.

I've tried to create an account on Facebook an/or Instagram a couple of times, but they want me to send them a photo of myself, in one case holding a piece of paper with a handwritten number they provide.

No idea why, since they don't have a picture of me to compare it with.

I find the "local" groups contain enough useful information to cancel out the trash. Also a few of the "special interest" ones. Will give Old Codgers a try.

Have also had a couple of good deals from Marketplace.

They probably know quite a lot about you, already,

They just need to be sure that the person applying is actually you.

So that all the additional information you're now going to give them about yourself, whether knowingly or not, goes into the correct profile. Thus making you more saleable to advertisers

Well, if you want to get a rough idea about how musch of the rest of the world thinks, it's quite useful. Unlike here, which is mainly old farts.

No they don't. They certainly don't know what I look like. In one case (Instagram) I hadn't even succeeded in signing up fully. The other was Facebook which I hadn't really used for anything. For about a month, they sent me messages asking me to join (unspecified) groups without suggesting why, then decided that they don't want me. I think I'm still logged in onto Instagram through that account on my tablet.

I really don't know what use these modern social network thingies are for. Might have been better if I had joined earlier when people were working them out. Bit like Sylvester Stallone and the three shells in the lavatory. (Demolition Man (1993) if you don't get the reference.)

What if someone else has tagged you in one of their photos?

As long as you?re not hoping for too much rational though?

I use Facebook in March to check the date of Lou's birthday.

Trust me. It's not worth forgetting another one.

I'm pretty safe - wife's birthday Christmas Eve, eldest son's and our wedding anniversary are on the same day in August (he was born on our first anniversary), middle son's 4 days after mine, youngest son's the day after Valentine's day (if she'd gone into hospital a couple of hours earlier, instead of trying to hold off, he'd have been born, by caesarean, on Valentine's day), my Dads's birthday 22nd October (according to Carter USM, "the day that they shot Kennedy"), Mum's birthday 5th November - I also have an aunt (Boxing Day), had an grandmother, (Christmas Day) and my sister is on 11th September (or 9/11 to the Americans).

It's reasonably difficult to forget any of those!

It's up to you who you have as friends on FB. And it is posts from them you'll most likely see on your page. But you can also join special interest groups - like DIY - and since it's an individual who sets that up, usually moderated to some extent. Those groups wouldn't allow the huge amount of OT you get here.

Our free local news group does, and its the same off topic stuff, mostly politics and covid.
