Electric motor reassembly

No need to go into the background of this, but I have won a dismantled

2kw single phase motor - just a box of bits.

I put it back together then realised I had two ~50mm dia. crinkly spring washers left over ! :>[ . I reassembled the motor with them between the bearings and the casing ends as they fitted that diameter perfectly, but have now wondered whether they were some sort of end thrust take up and should have been between the bearing face and the rotor. They are to all intents and purposes the same diameter as the bearing casing and about 4mm wide. Any ideas?

There was a thread recently about "Inverse screws" heads - the long threaded rods holding this motor together had these, but they were big enough to get a small shifter on and came out without bother. They aren't showing any signs of being fragile.

I would have expected there to be one fixed end and one floating end shaft locating arrangement, although the actual end thrust movement will be pretty limited. Also I have yet to come across a rotor/shaft assembly with the bearings sitting tight against the rotor but rather have the bearing positioned by a step on the shaft diameter
