Earth sleeving

Interesting question raised within the "rock on Tommy" post. Apparently the TV program showed the instalation of a an electrical socket outlet and they left the earth wire bare i.e no earth sleeving.

Now whilst this is not something I would do or agree with, the question it raises is: Is it a requirement under the 16th edition regs ?

Not sure about the actual regs but it's been good practice for about 40 years

I am the rankest newbie but (or rather so) I have the regs at hand. I think it may be in 543-03-02 which has at the end:

"Where the sheath of a cable incorporating an uninsulated protective conductor of cross-sectional area up to and including 6 mm2 is removed adjacent to joints and terminations, the protective conductor shall be protected by insulating sleeving complying with BS 2848."

(This is from the 2004 edition I bought 2nd hand so it may have been amended.)

That's the one. The requirement for sleeving has been in the Regs since the 14th edition, 1966.

If you have the 2004 brown cover edition (BS 7671:2001 incorporating Amendments 1 & 2) then that is still up-to-date. Amendment 2 was the one which brought in the new colours, amongst other changes.

Ah - my estimate of 40 years was pretty good then. ;-) The only regs - or rather guide to them - I've ever possessed is the 16th. Just usually guess it.
