showing the Ferranti semiconductor plant in Oldham in 1984. It's interesting how basic the fab process was - 'photolithography' not too far separated from 'photography', and at a similar scale. Not much different from PCB manufacture nowadays.

1978 and a few times later and was shown their ion implantation system for doping ICs. They also developed gallium arsenide semiconductors and had exotic devices such as water cooled airborne fast fourier transform modules for aperture synthesis radar. Needless to say, I didn't get to see the most interesting areas. John

Thanks for that. I worked a summer job at Gem Mill in the late 80's, writing some code to track production parameters on their transistor line (ZTX series). Still got a box full somewhere. It was the first and last time I handled an 8" floppy disc, as that was the source of the data on the Lorlin (?) ATE system. We had an 8" drive on a BBC micro to read it, and send it across to the VAX (GEMVAXA) via a serial connection, where it was analysed and graphed using BBN's RS/1 software.

Later I worked at the Hollinwood plant where they did the ASIC design, now buried under the M60 I think. They had an enormous room-sized plotter to print the mask designs for visual inspection. Often heard the call "Trouble at t'Mill" when the production lines at Gem went down.

Then I graduated and they went bust, so I got a job with the other leg of the UK computer industry...
