Just bought an angle grinder diamond disc that says it's suitable for "brick, concrete, tiles and cast iron".
Does that mean it's suitable for cast iron only and not other metals such as steel? And if so, why?

No
Cast iron is full of grains of free carbon, which act as a lubricant when cutting. Although steel also contains carbon, it's bound to the iron in the steel and doesn't have this lubricating effect.
that doesnt stop it cutting steel, but it may not last as well doing so
