Delayed mail

How do you know it was delayed in collection and not delayed before it was available?

You need to <view source> and look at the headers

First thing is to find out where the delay occurred... so look at the message in TB and hit CRTL+U to show the message source.

Copy the header of the message, and past into the message header analyser here:

Hmm.. Hitting CRTL+U gets pages of gobbledegook none of which is recognisable as a *header*.

I think the problem is local as the messages were delivered to my W7 box (using an earlier T'Bird) at switch on.

The first empty line marks the end of the headers and the start of the message, I doubt the website would object if you just pasted

A couple of months or so ago, my e-mail, Thunderbird from gmail, went very slow. I would see nothing when it logged on, and then a whole bunch of messages would arrive at once a few minutes later. I checked via webmail, and it was the same, it wasn't stuck between gmail and me, it wasn't setting to gmail in the first place. Since then, it has gradually improved, and if I am told to expect a message with a code, it will arrive within a minute. If it reverts to the slooooooow download, I will try the azurewebsites site and see what it can tell me.

Everything from the top down to the line above the first line of the email that you recognise.

If the older machine is configured to download and delete messages using POP3 then you might get a case where a message is found on that which never turns up on the other one. Although that would not explain late delivery on the other machine.

I note that if you setup gmail to import messages from an external IMAP or POP3 mail server, then it only polls the external account every 70 mins or so.

I only use Gmail via IMAP, so that should be irrelevant for my e-mail.

Hm. AZURE tells me it was delivered in 15 seconds.

Indeed - important to differentiate between accessing a gmail account using local IMAP/POP3 software, and having gmail access a mailbox using the same protocols. You can do one, the other, or both should you want.

Progress.. I think.

I allowed the T'Bird upgrade and now find the download button appears to function.

Ah. You have spotted the difference between someone who simply wants to make use of a service with someone who relishes understanding what makes it work.

If you look at the account settings page, then "server settings" there is usually a checkbox for "check for new messages at startup". That is normally on by default - might be worth checking it is not off on yours.

I ticked the box and re-started T Bird. No mails. As a check I had a look with Web Mail. 2 waiting mails. One from Amazon at Midnight and one from my daughter about an hour ago. While I was writing this, they both came in...
