They do add a tiny bit of heat back to the room in use.

Have a look at the ruby-dry dehumidifiers as they are almost silent. They have no compressor but instead use a rotating dessicant wheel.

Put it on a plug-in timer so it wont bother you at night. Humidistatic DHs are much to be preferred. DHs are available second hand, any type should do the job fine.

Won't just extra heat solve your problem? Dehumidifiers have to be emptied

... and the moisture evaporated by the extra heat has to be vented and cold air drawn in to replace.

Last winter we bought a "challenge" from Argos, it's got a slow fan setting but it's still not all that quiet. It's been taking 2-3 litres a day out recently, even more when we were at home all day and cooking a lot over Christmas. As suggested elsewhere run it on a timer (and set the humidistat a bit higher - drier - than you would if it was on 24/7).

Some models (ours included) have an exit port so you can connect a hose to a convenient drain - though this may only be of interest if you have an en-suite shower.
