Cutting mild steel

Hi all,

I have several dozen cuts to make in 15mm square box section (1mm thick walls). They all need to be about two foot long when finished. The issue is, I need to make nearly all the cuts at 45 degrees so as to get a nice clean right-angle joint with no gaps when it's welded. I don't own a chop saw and am not about to buy one just for this project. Can some kind soul suggest a reliable method for repeatedly making 45 degree custs in 15mm square box-section? TIA.

Hacksaw and a mitre block? Not perfectly accurate but probably good enough for welding.

Stick a metal cutting saw blade in a circular saw, and run it against a speed square as a guide.

or get a stand to turn a normal angle grinder into a cut off saw:

Mark it and cut carefully with a hacksaw.

Make a jig similar to a mitre box that holds the box securely

If you have an angle grinder, you can buy a mount to convert them to a chop saw like arrangement. They aren’t that expensive, about £20-£25.

OK for small work, I’ve used one and have considered buying one. Several on EBay last time I looked.

I use one of these with my angle grinder.

That looks like a good buy, cheaper than the ones I’ve seen in the past.

Can I ask which angle grinder you use with it, please? Mine is a Black and Decker, I think a 115 mm disk one but I need to check. Son in law has it at the moment but we are seeing them this weekend.

Have you got an angle grinder? A stand for that not very pricey. And some fine steel cutting disks.

No Idea, Its an old cheapo a pal gave me, no name to be seen, its yellow! He gave it to me when the equally old Power Devil that was mounted on it packed up.

It pretty well compatible with any angle grinders that have side handles at right angle to the body so not Makita, or at least not my Makita as the side handles are at unusual angles.

Ok, thank you.

That's my favourite suggestion so far, Alan, well done! Just for the hell of it I tried doing it by eye earlier today. It was

*miles* out and took ages to fettle both parts to fit properly. I found trying to judge 45 degrees by eye was *much* harder than I'd expected!

I had wrongly assumed you were of the vintage that had had a Copydex jointmaster. Even if you weren't so sad as to still have one - being in want of a Makita sliding-compound-Telegraph-Toughie-solving saw :(

I can't remember where mine came from. But all my different make angle grinders fit it. Including an ancient Wickes one.
