Covid-19 Facemasks DIY

Facemasks are getting hard to find. This is a DIY group. Anyone started to manufacture their own facemasks?

Given what people are wearing in the pictures, they seem to be mainly gauze or in clinical situations green fine cloth (cotton?).

It doesn't seem that complicated to use offcuts and some elastic to make your own. Old Laura Ashley material should also appeal to hipsters.

Maybe, before we rush in to help, we need to understand what the purpose of the said facemask is ?

The purpose of such tautologous objects is to keep your snot to yourself if you are, or might be, already infected.

I've got some old masks, but the elastic has perished.

Just need a diving mask with snorkel connected via some tube to a couple of one way valves, with the intake valve routed via a Dyson hepaire filter. :-)

Protective theatre!

(i.e. pointless, but will reassure the less well informed, while at the same time virtue signalling that you are "doing something about it")

The thing is, are they to protect others from your infections, or you from theirs? I'd have thought that any facce mask that offered biological level protection would be far more complicated. Indeed how these types of infections are spread are from contaminated surfaces like door handles and buttons , keyboards hanging on straps in the tube etc. The receiver only the had s to remove their mast and touch near their nose or mouth and there you are.
