Cordless phone battery sudden death investigation

There was a thread recently about someone wanting new batteries for their cordless phone, which looked happy but would then die without warning. Mine did that, and I put the old NiMH batteries on an analyser to find out why.



The first discovery is that one of the batteries has a capacity of 7mAh, and the other one 568mAh, for nominally 750mAh AAA batteries. The 7mAh battery would explain the sudden death - when pulled off the charger, cell voltage is good at about 3v for two cells. As a phone call progresses, the voltage declines. When the 7mAh cell gives up, there's a rapid drop to maybe 1.7v (I didn't measure it) and the phone gives up. The second cell is holding up its voltage fine, but it's no good by that point. I suspect the 7mAh cell has died from overcharging or being reverse biased when overdischarging.



The second discovery is Poundland cells are *awful*. I bought some to replace the above, thinking that the phone is only off-cradle for short periods so capacity doesn't matter. They were labelled 350mAh AAAs, but the analyser says their capacity is 9mAh and 12mAh respectively (testing AAAs at



200mA charge/discharge current). I had some other Poundland AAs, labelled
850mAh, which managed about 100mAh each (when measured at 500mA).

My collection of other AAs, including some 2100mAh Vapextech ones that must be at least 10 years old, all were 1500mAh or more (with the exception of one dud at 1100mAh).



So the conclusions are that cordless phones kill batteries over the long term, and there's not much you can do about it. And don't buy rechargeable batteries at Poundland.

FWIW the 5 or 6 cordless phones I've owned/supported killed batteries - but Panasonic KX-TCD 735 & 777 phones seem to do so very, very slowly. One handset is still on the Panasonic branded AAs it came with >10 years ago. Another is coincidentally on Vapextech AAs also >10 years old.

If your analyzer is like mine its capacity measurements can be quite misleading. Is it one of those 4 slot ones which can do normal charge, discharge, charge/test and recover? Mine tells me that quite a few cells which actually work quite well have capacity like the your bad cells of only a few mAh. I think it rejects cells at too high a voltage for many 'real world' applications.

Anything will 'kill batteries over the long term' they only have a finite charge/discharge cycle life.

I've put poundland rechargeables into a number of handsets and only occasionally had a bad one. Either you have some dud cells, or their standards have dropped badly or your analyser is way off - I don't know which.

I was disappointed with the life of my Duracell AAA NiMH batteries in a Gigaset cordless phone. I am hoping that the 7dayshop own brand replacements I bought will last longer.

Some testing of batteries that have apparently failed is necessary. I had some Gigaset phones of which all the handsets failed, after periods from years down to a few weeks. The symptoms were the batteries apparently losing capacity to the point the phones would only work on the charging cradle. But the fault was in the DC-DC converter in the phone which became steadily less effective. I vaguely looked at it, and tested the large, obvious capacitor, but didn't have the energy to test any of the unmarked other components. But got through some new batteries before realising they were failing to operate the phone at ever-increasing voltage.

Have you checked the on-load voltage of failing cells? My Gigaset phones failed at higher and higher cell voltages with still-good cells.

No but I have now made a note of the battery voltages in each phone!

Yessomething has happened to my cordless.It got very hot one day and the plus strip going to one of the cells melted and fell of at the bend. I'm loathe to ask a friend to repair the piece of metal by soldering a wire on and bending it into the right shape, as if it got hot, it could be either the charger is over charging, the cells are shorted or the phone is a short. The problems are because they are in series and as one always goes down first the other reverse charges it, hastening the end. Brian

Binned the faulty handset and managed to get a refurb from Holland at reasonable price- compared to the ones on offer from Germany at ridiculous prices.
