concrete ingredient ratio?

Hi

i'm about to lay some concrete flooring using sand/gravel ballast and cement. Can anyone help with the ratio of ballast to cement i need to use. I can only find ratio by weight. I need to know by volume - how many buckets of ballast per bucket of cement?

Any advice much appreciated

Thanks

Ratios are normally quoted by volume, not weight. 1:3:5 is the strongest concrete mix

Yes, but in this case the OP appears to be using all-in ballast which, in volume terms, requires a different ratio to that obtained by adding the sand and gravel elements together. For instance 1:2:4 gives the same result as 1:5.

specified in the wiki?

ISTM that this wiki has considerable drawbacks. Contrast the misleading one liner in the wiki with the wealth of information on our old friend

A bag of cement has 4 shovels full in it, a bucket has 2.

I'd do about 10 shovels of ballast to 1/2 a bag of cement in the mixer.

Sorry if i'm being thick! i am using just ballast and cement to do internal domestic flooring. Are you saying a ratio of 1:5 is suitable for the job?

I actually quoted the 1:5 ratio as it is directly equivalent to 1:2:4 when sand and gravel are specified separately.

IMO 1:2:4 will do the job as it is a strong mix but it might be overkill if you are just filling in a hole. AIUI 1:3:6 (1:7 1/2) is often used for bulk foundations and other applications where strength is not particularly important.
