Coal - Ratcliffe on Soar today

Went past the Ratcliffe on Soar power station today. Seemed to have all 4 boilers running at 0800, and then again at around 1500 though harder to tell as the weather had warmed up a bit.

Can't see what's happened from Gridwatch. Just a cloudy and still day? In summer? Or using up the remaining coal before it is shut down and converted to a fusion plant!

First of all there is no reason not to use up coal hours left .

Secondly there is a very good reason in summer when demand is very low, to have as much spinning mass online as possible to avoid the near disaster that happened a year or so back when unconventional generation was nearly 50% and grid frequency was not maintained under fault conditions..

I thought Ratcliffe was fitted with FGD scrubbers, so LCPD exempt anyway? After eon split into fossil and non-fossil businesses, even the fossil part don't seem to want to run it ...

I beg everyone's pardon, you are completely right. So it was probably fired up to simply make some money, use up its coal stocks and add some spinning mass to the grid

It is apparently due to close in 2025
