Cleaning rust

Sadly, no!

I think it's fairer to say that the general-purpose type of WD40 may not do everything exceptionally well - and there may be some things it doesn't really do well at all. However, it does do many things pretty well, and it's the sort of thing that most DIY households have at least one can of.

IME WD40 is pretty crappy for all its intended purposes, virtually all those applications are fulfilled with better products. I find its only use is as a cutting fluid for aluminium on the drill press.

As for the OP query, any contact that has been exposed to salt water is buggered.

Water wash, fibreglass pencil to remove corrosion, isopropyl alcohol wash, contact grease.
