Cheap website hosting for a small club?

Apologies as this is perhaps a bit off-topic, but it is something that I want to do myself.

I'm helping to run a small club and it's high time we provided it with a website as an alternative to sending out information to members by mass emails.

Although I have reasonable skills in HTML and CSS, my guess is these are irrelevant nowadays as most web hosting companies seem to provide drag-and-drop interfaces for building basic websites which are probably good enough. There are various free hosting services available but I assume is that these contaminate your website with banner ads that would be annoying, so I'm rather looking for a cheap hosting service, for low data volumes and low bandwidth use, at least initially. I'd be grateful for suggestions from anyone with relevant experience in registering domain names, and using web hosting and web-site building packages.

Thanks in advance.

TsoHost, really excellent support. Their 'lite' hosting costs £14.99 per year. Not quite an out of the box drag and drop interface to create your web site but you can install WordPress from their control panel with minimal hassle and there's lots of other ready to go software available too.

I Use QiQ, which is well worth looking at. though I have never used the web hosting, I do use it to register and run my domain name, I find them efficient and fast response to queries.

I've used Wordpress.com a couple of times. The free web-based one has some ads, but you get 3GB of storage for life. It's been plenty for what I wanted. Have a look at

if you like. I don't use wordpress for my domain name. I've had that from easily.co.uk for quite a long time now. Never had a problem with them.

I've used eUKhost for a number of years now, I've found them very good, and their tech support efficient and helpful.

Basic package is £40 year (will include a domain name registration if required) - though over specced for your requirements I suspect, but I can recommend them.

Nowadays, for someone wanting a straightforward site I'd recommend installing Wordpress. Though at it's heart intended for blogging etc. it works fine for mostly static sites as well - you just provide the content and it worries about displaying it all nicely.

It's quick to install (eUKhost, like many others provides a system for installing it for you anyway) There are lots of themes available to change the look of the site - these are easy enough to mod as well if you want with HTML and CSS.

It easy to set it up with different users, and it easy to post new stuff without having to know anything about html or anything like that

Have a search back in here, this has been discussed before within the last year. Different set of answers this time... B-)

If you have no objections to google, have a look at google sites. It's free, many templates, moderately easy to set up, good for a basic static site. The sort of back end interface required will depend on who is going to be adding content to the site, are they computer literate or have difficulty sending an email. Google is more to the computer literate end.

I use 123-reg for domains and DNS only, they do offer some free webspace but I don't think it's much above a couple of pages.

Personally I'd avoid like a case of ebola anything to do with Fasthosts.

Locks out those that don't have a facebook account, though I guess you can make evrything "public".

Otherside of the coin maybe some members of the club don't want other members finding their facebook.

If you prefer old-school HTML / CSS and uploading by ftp you can get it for free at

assuming the 50MB disk space and

100MB/month bandwidth is sufficient. It should be for a small club that just wants web presence.

Google Sites is worth a look too (also free) but don't get sucked into Google Apps which isn't.

I've only had limited experience, but one.com is perfect for hosting the relatively light requirements of our "Bridleways" group. I think I originally got my own domain from 123 but I've never fancied their hosting offers.

Thanks to all those who responded. At present it looks to me as if Wordpress might do the job, so I'll investigate it further.
